However! In any given year the conditions can cause crop failure of one or more plant types. Even the best gardener can lose half his tomatoes in a too cold or too wet summer. The point being plan to lose some crops and plant alternatives and more then you need. When the potato blight hit Ireland they were unable to deal with this (partly political and partly the climate) and sufferred severely.
