Long Term Survival - The Mors Kochanski Super Shelter

Keeping warm during the cold winter months can be a challenge. Using this technique for your shelter can be the differnce of a comfortable nights sleep versus freezing all night, possibly to death.

Survival Instructor Mors Kochanski pioneered this design. I am sure many others have thought of using some aspects of this shelter without being exposed to his work, but he is evidently the first to be recognized for it.

Cody Lundin and Dave Canterbury used this design on one episode of Dual Survival when they were stranded on an island during the winter.

Here is a video featuring this concept.

  1. ...good vids, long time back we built a couple of these(similar, second vid, no mylar, just tarps and canvas) under the ninth street bridge, below the dam of besser lake, in alpena michigan(thunder bay)...three days(two nights) of steelheadin'...used sterno cans for heat, was plenty warm...no one went back to the cabin, we all stayed, we all caught fish, temps were in the single/low double digits for highs, and (-)single digit lows...

...i guess it's a bit different doing it for fun, versus necessity, but it works nonetheless

  2. Hi Ken, glad to see you made it through the holidays!

I hope that I only ever use it to have fun. Sounds like that fishing story was good times...

  3. Very cool - I live waaaaay down south, so have very little knowledge of camping in snowy cold conditions, so visual aids like this are great teaching moments. Thank you Selous Scout.

(by the way, no one asked you in case it escaped you)

  6. Some one reported his results with a super shelter. He said there was only a six degree difference between the inside and outside. Although he was pleased with the results, those results seem pretty poor to me. Others claim a temperature gain of 40 to 45 degrees. Something seems amiss.

    1. Hi Lance, thanks for commenting.
I doubt Cody Lundin and Dave Canterbury would risk their professional reputations by falsely representing something others may try and report as failure. Dave reported it being very warm inside and it was quite cold outside.I would suspect the person who had the poor results may have not constructed something properly. Without knowing all the details I can only speculate.
